"A BIT OF CLAY ON THE SKIN"

Every year, the Fondation Bernardaud hosts an annual exhibition on contemporary ceramics that has become a not-to-be-missed event that allows one to discover works by artists that are not often displayed in France but yet bear witness to the prolific and global activity with ceramics that the Fondation Bernardaud strives to promote.

Beauté - humilité - céramique

Everybody dreams of making a "refuge" for himself, a place of his own to escape to, just as sooner or later everybody seeks out the simple things in life that are genuine and lasting. In spite of becoming increasingly accustomed to the new and artificial dreamworlds that technilogy affords, many of us still feel a basic need to recreate an uncluttered existence that enables us to slow down and escape, however fleetingly, the daily race against the clock and the pressure of passing fashions.

The exhibition « Valeur Refuge » echoes our desire to return to our roots showing us how successfully ceramics can convey a sense of reassurance and humility, both as everyday objects and sculptures. The works displayed in Valeur Refuge are imbued with ancient references and a basic ruggedness that does away with all superfluous detail. They make a case for an artistic premise that draws its inspiration from popular art, one that is rustic in the most positive and bucolic sense of the word, composed of objects that are both accessible and enduring, linked to the wisdom of manual labour and down-to-earth good sense, at one with nature.

Un peu de terre sur la peau

The Fondation d’entreprise Bernardaud presents an exhibition around an art form that is not well recognized in France: Contemporary jewelry. 

140 compelling ceramic creations, on loan from the various artists, revisit ancestral forms of artistic expression as a means of casting them in new perspectives. While traditional jewelry is linked with precious metal craftwork of the applied arts, contemporary jewelry has become a field of experimenta tion in new arenas of art, design and artisanal creation.

18 international artists offer a revitalized and personal vision. Certain pieces in the exhibit reference the history of the arts and traditions associated with jewelry while others totally reinvent their place, significance and materials.
